The 2011 Kia Sportage took on the streets of San Francisco recently by unleashing an army of the compact sport utility vehicles in a multitude of colors. Kia is calling the new Sportage “A sports car with a backpack” because the little ute can easily carry a load up a mountain and still get up to 31 mpg. The third generation Sportage features an inline four-cylinder engine that produces 176 horsepower. There is 10 percent more cargo room than the previous generation, with enough width between rear wheel wells to secure a couple of mid-size dog crates (21 inches wide). Some of the cool extras — literally — include a glove box that keeps drinks cool on long journeys. You’ll also find a heated and cooling driver’s seat, push-button start, large glass panoramic roof, and Audi-like daylight running lights. Available in nine colors, the 2011 Sportage has a base price of 295 for the manual transmission version “L”; 295 for the LX and 295 for the EX model. With a sleek design and many extras, the 2011 Kia Sportage is bound to be a people pleaser for budget-conscious adventurers. Just don’t forget your backpack!
